This week on the farm we are planting summer squash, winter squash and melons!! We also just sent out our famous pumpkin seedlings to grow big and strong at Headwaters Garden over in Three Forks, MT!

As a reminder, our Summer CSA and Market Stand Schedule started this week! You can pick up your share at the Market Stand:

  • Tuesdays 12 pm to 6pm

  • Saturdays 8 am to 1pm

The Market Stand will also be open for purchases on Thursdays from 12 pm to 6 pm.

Despite Sunday night’s bitter frost we are still abundant in many vegetable and flowers. However, our peppers and tomatillos did not fare too well and our potatoes froze! They hadn't even popped up on Friday but by Sunday their small leaves made it out of the soil just in time for the big freeze. Bummer!

We can do a few things to try and mitigate the effects of a late spring frost. We use a combination of both row cover and irrigation to help keep our plants a little more protected from cold weather. Row cover is used often in combination with metal hoops to “tent” planted rows with a white polyester or polypropylene non-woven fabric. It sort of acts like a blanket for our plants! You may also be surprised to learn that we irrigate our plants during spring frosts to mitigate the freezing risk. Weird, huh? I thought so too. It turns out that irrigating plants before, and especially during, a short and relatively mild frost actually plumps up the plant cells so they are more resistant to bursting from the cold.

Unfortunately for us, the Sunday frost was much longer and started much earlier than expected so when Matt woke up at 2:30am to run the irrigation, the frost had already set in.

With all that being said, we’re still loaded with veggies right now, especially green garlic, so come on by!
