Happy September CSA members! It is officially tomato season! We have cherry tomatoes, blush tomatoes, and heirloom tomatoes that you will see for sale in the market stand as well as featured in your CSA boxes. If you are interested in ordering No.1 or No. 2 heirloom tomatoes by the flat, you can order ahead or stop in the marketstand as we sometimes have flats ready for sale. Each flat is 20lbs and selling at $40.00 for No.2 tomatoes and $75.00 for No. 1 tomatoes. No. 2 tomatoes are mature, clean, and well-developed but are not perfect, allowing for some slight blemishes or imperfections, making them perfect for canning recipes (try the freezer stable tomato sauce recipe below)! If you would like to order ahead you can indicate so on your CSA sign-off sheet or reach out to Matt or Jacy. In addition to tomato season, it’s officially cider season! We fired up the cider press last Saturday and made our first batches of RCF and custom cider. RCF cider is for sale when available in the market stand for $10 a half-gallon. But don’t forget, our Whole Farm CSA Members receive 12 half-gallon jugs as part of their subscription. Whole Farm CSA Members collect these throughout the Fall season in batches or all at once if our inventory allows it. While we love fresh apple cider for drinking, there are a plethora of ways to incorporate apple cider into your fall and winter cooking including stews and broths, marinates, cocktails, baked goods, sauces and more! Check out the website linked below that shares 36 different uses for apple cider. Don’t forget that you can store your apple cider in the freezer for up to 6 months if you aren’t going to use it up within 1 week of pressing. Lastly, our cider storage has taken over where CSA eggs and flower bouquets were stored for pick-up; therefore, please find your bouquets and eggs in the cold room moving forward.
CSA boxes this week are packed with some yummy goodies! We want to highlight the braising which creates a seasonal combination of greens and vegetables that have varied earthy flavors. Contrasting, but complementary, the assertive flavors of this mix offer a bold taste. Perfect for quick cooking, this blend of hardy greens is excellent braised, lightly sautéed, added to stir-fries or wilted. Check out the recipe below for a simple braised mix salad with a summer twist. If you are a pickle lover, use your dill to make some fresh pickle brine! Or, try the linked tzatziki sauce below for a refreshing, greek addition to your summer meals. You can always dry your dill for later use as well; hang dry to place on a cookie sheet in the oven on the lowest setting until brittle.
