Howdy CSA members! I hope the slow shift back into the school year is treating everyone that is impacted well! For those removed from the school year cycle, I hope you are enjoying the last few weeks of warm weather before Fall starts settling in. We wrapped up summer farm camps here at Rocky Creek, but we are excited to offer a 9 week Fall Farm School program that will run from September through October. Fall Farm Camp offers one camp day a week for students of any type of school situation (public, private, homeschool). Students ages 7-11 will be hosted on Thursday from 9am - 3:00pm and students ages 4-6 will be hosted on Fridays from 9am - 1:30pm. For more information and registration follow the “Education” tab on our website or by following this link. In addition to shifting from summer camps to Fall Farm School, we have been harvesting our field flowers and preparing them to be dried for fall bouquets and wreaths. We are still offering U-pick flowers, so swing by the market stand to take advantage! Veggie crew as been pulling in large harvests and prepping produce for winter storage as well and we continue to see new summer produce coming through the market stand and CSA boxes. Lastly, don’t forget that Winter CSA went on sale this Monday, August 18th. Winter CSA runs from November through January and includes more root and storage crops, as well as microgreens, herbs, and salad greens grown in greenhouses to keep you eating well through the cold winter months. You can view details and sign-up on our website under the “CSA” tab or by following this link.
CSA boxes this week have a fun surprise… apples! Our apples were coming in a few weeks earlier than anticipated this year and are ready to be enjoyed! While it’s a little toasty this week to fire up the oven and make an apple crumble or apple pie, why not keep the grill going after a BBQ and try grilled apple slices with honey and cinnamon; recipe below! Additionally, you will find Daikon radish in your CSA box. Daikon and radish are both root vegetables in the same family, but they differ in appearance, flavor, and culinary uses. Daikon, also known as winter radish, is typically larger, longer, and milder in flavor than the common red radish. Daikon radish are milder, slightly sweet, and less peppery making allowing for a various integrations into both raw and cooked dishes. Pickled daikon radish is popular in Korean cuisine and easy to make! I’ve linked a recipe below to a three ingredient pickled radish recipe. If you are looking to enjoy these radish cooked, check out the recipe below for sautéed daikon radish. Lastly, if you are not sure how to incorporate your sage into this week’s meals, don’t forget you can always dry your herbs to use for later use. Sage is a great herb to use in Thanksgiving stuffing!
