Hello and happy Wednesday! We are taking advantage of the little bursts of warmth and sun coming through the clouds this week to get back into the fields after a rainy last week. We are busy prepping our berry field for the harvest and U-pick season that is quickly approaching. The raspberries have been pruned and a few new beds of strawberries are in the ground this year! We are getting into our weeding routine, which is a huge part of what we do on the farm in the spring time of the season. One of our favorite tools for weeding is called a scuffle or stirrup hoe. This hand tool allows the ground to be turned up from a push and pull motion and is perfect for getting those small weeds right when they start popping up and for weeding between and around plants. It is exciting to start tending to what we have planted in the field with the promise of beautiful flowers and yummy veggies to come in the new few months!
In your CSA boxes this week, you will continue to find a variety of spring greens, veggies, and herbs. One of the amazing treats you will find in your box this week is a personal favorite of mine - green garlic! Green garlic is the first growth of a typical garlic bulb that you think of and looks similar to a bunch of scallions. They smell and taste more mild, sweet, and fresh than the cloves of garlic you’ll be eating later in the season. I was talking to a CSA member in our market stand today said the best pesto you can make uses green garlic! She said she makes a big batch and then freezes it in an ice cube tray to easily be used easily all season long!
