Howdy CSA members! We hope you’re staying warm! Despite the cold weather recently, we continue to have a great turnout of community members for Fall festivities each weekend. It looks like we are having a break in the cold spell and expects some warmer weather Friday and Saturday this week. To maximize the sunlight on Friday, we will have tractor rides running all day and Freestone kitchen will be on site with hot cider donuts. Additionally, we are setting up a free pumpkin carving station by the creek. We butchered our first batch of turkeys this last week and they are weighing right on track at 12-18lbs. We still have spots available if you would like to claim a turkey for thanksgiving as well as some birds stored on site for immediate pick-up. Additionally, you will see your CSA sign-out slot lists 4 pumpkins; however, we switched that to be unlimited! Grab any pumpkins you would like for the season and enjoy!

CSA boxes this week are packed once again with some regular goodies as well as some produce we haven’t seen for awhile such as Hakurei turnips and a new debut, ginger! This is the first year GVB has grown ginger and we are excited by the harvest. Ginger is popular in Asian cuisine as well as integrated into a variety of tinctures and supplements due to its health benefits. If you don’t use all of your ginger this week, try making your own ginger paste that freezes for up to 6 months. You’ll also see quite a few Hakurei turnips in this week’s box. We suggest pickling your turnips in a simple but delish brine. Follow the recipe below! Additionally, if you’re looking for a warm meal in this chilly Fall weather, try incorporating both ingredients for a pan-seared ginger-miso turnip dish, also linked below. Lastly, it’s always soup season for me; however, nothing like bringing in the winter weather with some delish stock or chicken noodle soup. We have celeriac, celery root, and onions in the market stand that will pair beautifully with this week’s carrots and whole frozen chicken. You can even kick it up a notch and throw in some delicatta, jester, carnival, acorn, kobocha sunshine, and spaghetti squash!
