Happy August! Can you believe we are already nearing the end of summer? We are prepping for the festivities and events that accompany the end of summer and beginning of fall, including the sale of Winter CSA starting August 18th. Check out the “CSA” tab on our website for more information and sign-up. While our apples are still a few weeks out from U-pick season, we are accepting your apples for our custom cider press! You can drop off apples at the Rocky Creek market stand and we will store them in our cold room and press them into cider in the coming weeks when inventory builds. Please make sure to transfer your apples into one of our bins for storage. Additionally, GVLT is hosting a Field Day at Rocky Creek Farm on September 7th from 3pm - 7pm where the community can join for field day-style games, a picnic-style BBQ sourced from local farmers and ranchers, beverages, and live music! All are welcome, sign up online and pay what you can! Lastly, we are accepting turkey orders! You can secure your turkey in-person at the Rocky Creek market stand by providing your name, phone, email, and a $30 deposit. Turkeys are anticipated to be 12-18lbs at $7 per lb. If you sign-up during our off-hours, please use our venmo or cash box to submit your deposit.
CSA this week is packed full of new harvests including potatoes, green beans, garlic and more tomatoes and raspberries! You’ll notice that we have a mix of traditional green beans as well as dragon’s tongue beans. While very similar to traditional green beans, dragon’s tongue beans are slightly nuttier and possess a unique pale color with vivid purple streaks. When cooked, the purple streaks fade, revealing a creamy yellow color. Enhance your typical sautéed green bean recipe with an added sauce. Check out the recipe below for toasted almond, lemon butter green beans. Did you know that a dried head of garlic can last for several months if stored properly in a cool, dry, and dark place? If your garlic is piling up, don’t hesitate to store it away for winter use. Or, consider using the fresh garlic and basil for homemade pesto. You can even incorporate carrot tops and kale for an additional nutritional value. Pair the pesto with some cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and mozzarella chunks over chilled pasta for a refreshing pasta salad dish.
